RUN/WALK FOR TARA

2011 Results and Recap

November 11, 2011

EASTHAMPTON, GALBRAITH FIELD:  Approximately 280 people participated in the tenth annual Run/Walk for Tara to benefit eating disorder programs on Friday, November 11, the birthday of Tara Sheehan, a Southampton resident and runner who died of anorexia in 2002. Walkers and runners enjoyed the cross country 3.5 mile course on a windy 48 degree day. This was the largest field of participants ever.

Officials from the Williston-Northampton School, the city of Easthampton and the Run for Tara had to make some changes in the course, due to damage caused by the October snow storm.  The result was a 3.5 mile course, rather than the traditional 5K (3.1 miles), but all of the participants were up for the extra challenge.

Members of the Sheehan family welcomed the runners and walkers, thanking them for coming out to celebrate Tara’s birthday and to raise funds to support eating disorder programs.   The Southampton Community Chorus, under the direction of Kathy Marks, entertained everyone with rousing folk songs.

Donald Pacher ran a strong race from start to finish, completing the course in 20:31 – 25 seconds ahead of runner-up Roger Furr. Maura McDonald and Elizabeth Cullen came in 1-2 in the women’s race, finishing in 24:12 and 24:44 respectively.

The 10th annual Run for Tara also added a new event this year. Eighteen children between the ages of 3 and 8 participated in the first quarter mile race, competing for ice cream cones from Mt.Tom’s Homemade Ice Cream. Kimberly won the 7-8 division with the best overall time, a blazing 1:36 — a faster pace than all but three of the adults! Maddison won the 5-6 division with a 2:13, while Teddy led the packed (10 runners) 3-4 division with a 2:33. Brady, Sadie, and Thomas were runners-up in the 7-8, 5-6, and 3-4 divisions respectively.  Most importantly, all of the kids had a fun time, feasted on pretzels after the race, and now have a personal time to try to beat on November 11, 2012.

This year, THE TARA FUND is giving a grant to MEDA, the Multi-Service Eating Disorder Association, to do educational workshops in the high schools and colleges in western Massachusetts.

Last year, the TARA FUND gave a $5000 grant to the Walden Behavioral Center, in Northampton, to set up a scholarship in Tara’s name, to assist people who don’t have insurance or whose insurance doesn’t cover the cost of the program.

More than 10 million people suffer from eating disorders in the U.S.

Nancy Conz again served as this year’s race coordinator, working with Johanna Korpita, Janet Brown, Virginia Ahart and their team of 60 volunteers.

In addition to the volunteers, the Sheehan family would like to thank the host – the Williston Northampton School– for making the event possible and its sponsors for raising so much money for eating disorder awareness and treatment. Major sponsors include: Alterrnate Generator, Florence Savings Bank, Goggins Real Estate, David Sullivan, D.A., Easthampton Savings Bank, Finck & Perras Insurance, and murraycharitymall.com.  In addition, Bashista Orchards, Gorrilla Bars, and the Manhan Café provided food and fuel for runners and volunteers.  Finally, more than 75 local individuals and businesses donated prizes for the annual raffle that follows the race.  A list of all co-sponsors will be posted to the website this week.

If you would like to contribute to this year’s effort, please send a check to THE TARA FUND, c/o John and Maureen Sheehan, 127 Pomeroy Meadow Rd., Southampton, MA 01073.

In order of finish, runners are listed below. Results from the children’s quarter mile are then listed alphabetically by age group.
